A process

Oh. Also I'm done with production. I might go back and make personal touch ups in a week or so, but for now I'm done.   Soon I'm going to make a post of all the cool things I made (fully animated scenes, boards, backgrounds, and etc that didn't make it into the movie).

I'm also cutting a short teaser trailer.

SOUND. LOCKED.

Check that timeline out.

A Lil' Dental Music...

"A little dental music,
strings a strumming,
flutes a trilling.

Numbing minds and calming nerves,
while steps away, the beast is drilling.
Muzak in the lobby,
helps the patients to ignore.

The fact that writhing agony,
waits right behind the door."
- Howard Ashman (1982)

Here are more score samples by the awesome Daniel Rothblum. There is no picture because I don't want to post too much of my film to compromise it for festival eligibility.  It is not finalized, but I'm loving it so far.

Easiest: Sitting down to animate.

Hardest: Making sure I finish by picture lock.

Score Samples

Hey hey,

Not much to say this week but, I'm working on my new 2nd half of my film, which can be seen in storyboard format by CLICKING HERE.

I've been a little sick, which just makes me tired which is no fun, so I'm trying to deal with that while I animate and draw backgrounds all bloody day every single day. I've already cut some scenes of my new ending, but I'm TRYING SO DAMN HARD TO FINISH IT LIKE IT IS THERE.

I've realized that my panther has become the fun character to animate, and the tiger is SO borrrrrrring, that I will certainly be toning his animation down, making it more limited, thus saving myself time.

Not much else to say besides I'm working hard hard hard.

Oh. Here's a score sample. I'm meeting with my composer tomorrow to go over more specifics!

Ensemble Fights.

This is a week of a lot of posts, but maybe that's just because I'm trying to make the best film possible and have to tell y'all about it!

Looking at my boards, Sean Manning gave me a good idea that is also foreshadowing that I will work in, especially since I need to re-stage the one shot that he commented on, because its awful. So good thing that that is about to be sorted.

So Malcolm and Julius rescue the father and barrel out of that cave lickety split. Then they are surrounded by ghosts and that is when the fight breaks out.

So since there are three of them, and too many ghosts to keep track of, naturally, I will have to get myself some experience with ensemble fights and other shots of things I want to happen and how they should come about in a well directed way.

I'm bustin full of ideas. Here it comes.

Exploring, Depth, and all that Jazz....

The other night myself and the ever talented Sean Manning hung out and spent the evening watching Prince of Egypt. Now, when I say 'watched Prince of Egypt', I'm kind of lying, because all we really did was gawk at every scene and imagine how amazing it would be if any given sequence in the film could be one of our thesis'.

As you know from the previously written poem, as I've been working lately, I have been nixing boring scenes and quickly re-making them as better, more character driven, and easier to watch (at least I think so). And of of the sequences that has frankly been bugging me (sans the lab, which is now 'fixed') was the sequence once they enter the portal world.

Frankly it was dry and un-interesting because everything just happened without any major actions from the characters driving the plot. The movie was essentially a film where things happen to characters, not a movie where characters make things happen - and simply put: that is a problem.

I believe in telling stories that are character driven, and as I look over the 'Portal World', I keep finding more and more problems. 1) It's too damn long. 2) The father should be more nervous/ afraid for his son having come to rescue him instead of just saying "Oh good, you came I knew you would..." as if he has just been Diva-ing out 'Damsel in Distress" style waiting to be saved. 3) The ghosts just come over the hill, which frankly, isn't very scary, and is pretty much just random. 4) They run and run and run and run and run and run and run and escape. Where is the excitement in watching OR animating that? 5) The Panther pretty much stops running and gives up on life for no reason, and sacrifices himself in a way that doesn't even help out anyone else since there is no delay caused at all. And, I look back on my animatic and say "What the hell, Ezra. Are you kidding? You want to direct features, and you can't even handle a 5 min film at a capable level?"

And I can't have that.

So I took the day off working yesterday to separate myself from my film for a little while and then I spent today crafting a remedy to my many problems.

First I went on Youtube (the best visual reference library in the world) and looked up all of my favorite scenes (action and climatic-type) and watched them to see what the pro's do that made me love their scenes so much. If you have time I recommend you watching all these clips too, as they are all great.

After watching these clips and a few more many times, I realized a few things. At this point in a story, a Hero doesn't run from their problems. The face them the best that they can to protect their goal. Wide shots are often used to diminish the size of the hero to his threat and make him seem meek. Lighting becomes very important, as does the environment. Creative camera angles are used, not just closeup, midshot, straight, and over-the-shoulder. There is false hope at a point, and the hero usually seems to distract or trick the villain to win, as opposed to using brute force. Demonstrating brain power over physical.

But the most important part is that the hero doesn't run. He stays to fight to protect the goal. He stays to fight to ensure that the villain/threat can never harm or threaten him or the things he loves again. He risks it all to prove and protect what he believes in.

And Malcolm and Julius need to do this too. This is why they exist. This is why they went on the journey. This is what they signed up for.

Now I've never been a terribly 'compositionally visual' person, and I mean that in the sense of that I don't see things in terms of camera angles and shots and what not. I can think of action and excitement like nobodies business, but when it comes to picking pans, or sweeps, or all those other camera moves, I have trouble. But I'm working right now, using lots of reference, and I'm going to do the best I can, which is really the most anyone can ever say. I really am learning more every day. I've never *really* made a 2D short before, I've never colored my animation and done backgrounds and all that stuff, but I am learning how to do it, and I don't think this is bad for a first attempt.

So here goes. I'll tell you something though. It's going to be better than it is now.

Get ready, cause here it comes.

A gravely serious message of vast importance.

This week I thought it would be fine,
To write my blog post in a rhyme.
So now proceed to be filled in
on thesis Tiger production.

[rhyme scheme changes here]

I've become quite the workaholic
working mornings into night.
Ne'er is there time for hobbies,
laundry, eating, fun at night...

For committed I've become
to working in my cubicle.
In dirty clothes, I sit and hum
while drawing my worn pencil.

By now I know that I've amassed
'bout 2 minutes of my final renders.
Except one scene needs one more pass
to put reflections in a cars mirrors.

For difficulties I shall note
the scene where a car drives ahead
It was difficult to composi(o)te
into the scene, live action foot'ge.

Because the car drives very still
and footage shot was rather shakey
I might reshoot, but what a pill,
In truth, I'm feeling slightly lazy.

Alas! Some good news I can share
I woke up the other morning
And thought "this lab scene's much to bare,
and frankly, rather boring."

So out I took my pad and pen
and dreamed of a new sequence
I storyborded it; and then -
I went to work with frequence.

And happily I can announce
after nights of different sleep
my sleep schedule is back intact
and the sequence near complete!

There's just about 6 shots left now,
They're passing rather quickly.
And I'll be done with .5 of my film
and keep chuggin' on redic'sly.

So, now I guess this poem is done,
for things are quite on track,
I will post changes in full detail soon
Along with pics and facts!

Por} {tals.... and more!

So I rendered that today. Obviously in HD. That is what will be seen when the portal door opens. It's a long clip, so it won't seem repetitive, and will cut down on render time later, since it is already compressed into a single video. It didn't take too long to make, and I am very happy with it.

So, as we speak I am FINALLY rendering the shot I've been working on almost non-stop for the past couple of days. It's the longest shot in my film. The shot where the Father gets pulled through the portal. Here's a still from it.

The black edge is because you are seeing it through the
young Tiger's eye/perspective.

Anyway, that looks really cool, and turned out great. I'd say its some of my personal best animation so far. At about 10 seconds long, its the longest shot in my film, and it also has some of the most movement/ action, as well as its pretty much a 6 character interaction scene, with tons of lighting and perspective. So difficulty of drawing, as well as time spent rendering is probably the longest/hardest stuff I have to do in the whole film. I love how this turned out, so by proxy, every scene after this should be pretty darn easy to do. That's what I say right now anyway. (Well, I know one shot that's gonna be a huge pain).

Pretty much, tomorrow I will jump into animating the world through the portal. I have a pretty good idea of how I want the sky and earth to work, and it should all be pretty easy to do the backgrounds and sort it all out. Lots'a greens n purples, weee! Still, I'm a little pressed for time I think, so I'm not going to do anything leisurely till after picture-lock on the 31st of March, at least I'll try my hardest.

There's going to be a lot of cool stuff coming up soon, and I'm gonna post screen caps of all of it!

GET EXCITED. I KNOW I AM!

Ooooh, my render's done! See y'all later!

No I don't work for the CIA.... (But why do you ask?)

Because I shall not be uploading any completed scenes to this blog. "WHATS THAT?!" you bellow (in disgust), "I COME TO THIS BLOG FOR UPDATES, NOT NOT UPDATES. WHAT GIVES?"

"Well, dearly devoted reader," I coolly reply, "Because two things; 1. A lot of these scenes are going to look awesome, and I don't want to ruin the surprise by having you, the dearly devoted reader/fan of The Tiger, see the great scenes out of order and not feeling the full effect when the film is completed that a viewer should have, and 2. Because if too much finished film comes up to this blog, then I might lose the chance to enter it in a lot of festivals, and I don't want that to happen, but, run-on-sentences aside, I will of course continue to post fully-rendered screen shots of the film, so your excited momentum does not falter away like the fat on Peter O'Toole's body -

Oh, old age. Still's got them blue eyes though (wink wink ladies)!

- and trust me, it will not because I have a slew of shots to render tomorrow and then I will have more and more after that and I will sit in my ivory tower watching finished clips bellowing with 'awe' so loudly that you will hear and your interest will remain in my grasp; but of course I must tell you new things I have done this week - 1st, I changed my work schedule a bit, because I was getting quite bored animating the laboratory, so I decided to do some more fun things for a bit and then I'll get back to it; example A) I am working on the 'flashback' sequence that I talked about last week, and then I am going to move into working on the shots in 'The Nether', and all those will come out soon and be super neat I hope- also my animation has new found life and for (you got it!) two reasons; 1) Andreas Deja came to talk the other day and watching him draw always inspires me, and 2) I have decided to do all my animation straight-ahead, instead of pose-to-pose ( I started animation with stop motion, which is straight ahead, and that is how I learned to emulate movement, so naturally working in my 'native tongue' makes it all look much better) and its true, because my new scenes I've been doing move with much more 'acting' than the previous ones - sure it takes more time to clean up and I have to watch masses more, but the animation will be much better, maybe I'll be kind (rewind) and post one finished shot with my upgraded technique soon - all I know is I'm having so much more fun and finding so much more motivation doing all my animation straight ahead; and any ways on that note, I have nothing much else to say this week (except for 2 things, duh), 1) Peep the picture at the top of the post, thats from the flashback, that I am working on right now, and 2) run on sentences this long are REALLY HARD TO WRITE.

Peas.

Undah Pressuh Pressuh.....

An updated version of my thesis animatic, featuring some alternate lines (not mixed to the right levels yet), some pencil tests and rough animation, and an alternate car scene and rescue of the father.

Now besides that, there is a flashback scene that will be included in the animatic at the end of the week. I just wanted to wait till I have some more pencil tests so it can be a big update all in one go. These next few days, I have a lot of work ahead of me because I will be attempting to complete the entire first two minutes of the film (sans flashback) leaving me two months to do the next three-and-a-half minutes, which are much more animation intensive. Hopefully all goes according to plan.

Tonight, I'll be venturing out with my own personal camera to shoot a few live action plates for the driving scene (see if my theory works), and then I'll just be animating with a big compositing and rendering day either Saturday or Sunday. For the smoke, since this film is rather smoke heavy, I will be compositing live action smoke on the screen from a folder of elements and particle effects I have, so that should add a nice touch as well as make everything much easier. Right now its just like I'm staring at a giant puzzle of 1000 pieces trying to figure out where to begin, so many elements to make and put together. But, you have to start somewhere, so okay, deep breath, here I go!

Art is for wimps.

I say this because this week I have no art to show you.

If you wish to see art, please consult the last two posts. One is a parody and one is a legitimate screen capture.

Anyways.

Greetings Men and Men-of-Woe (or as they insist I call you, women),

Over the past few weeks I have been working on animation galore, as well as minor story changes and such. Since I am not in a terribly humorous mood, but instead a terribly tired one; I will outline what I have done and what changes I have made in the most boring way possible. Binary Code.

Ok. I'm done with that. As I was saying....

I have simplified the story a decent amount. Mainly, I have dropped the ring, and coughing from the Panthers character, because stuff like that is best suited in a feature film, and too much to develop in a short. Likewise, I have also dropped the 1st exorcism scene. It wasn't lending anything to the story and literally made me bored the last time I watched it.

So now. Tiger picks up Panther. They get in the Car n talk. Lil' flashback showing the Dad getting dragged away. Get to the lab. Go through Portal. Find Dad. He is submerged in a goop/gas. Take him out. Ghosts come. They run. Panther is lost. The remaining two are safe. End credits. Button. There. That is my film. Why wasn't it ALWAYS that simple!? When I think about how complicated it was before it makes me feel like this a little.

So now. I recently finished the backgrounds that are for the interior of the car sequence. I am going to shoot the stuff that is moving outside of the windows as they drive on some night in RL and then add some filters so it looks animated n saves me some time as soon as I get a chance. I think that will make a cool look, and push the 'real' look of the world I'm going for before they enter the portal.

I've officially completed TWO shots, meaning they are ready to render, and likely have been already. These are the opening. Then 50% of the Car scene has been roughed out fully and just needs refinements, and I should be done with the rest of the car scene soon. Then it's just color and lighting so it feels like they really are in a moving car. Not sure how I'll do the lighting moving over them yet, but I'll figure it out soon. Any Ideas? Please comment below.

I have 4 shots ready to render out in full color from the Lab Scene at this point, and the only reason I have not is because I need to make sure the Lab is EXACTLY how I want it before I start as to save time later. Pretty much, what lighting per shot (green or normal) and is there damage leftover on the portal since dear old Dad was taken by brute force on that beautiful and haunting December evening. Also one shot has the absolute shittiest mass control I have ever animated and I simply won't stand for it. So as soon as that is dealt you'll see a great deal more shots finished.

I'm about to begin backgrounds for the Nether (thanks Notch) aka the Spirit Zone, and that will be sorted soon too. I've started getting a bit of a nice work flow going on, and hopefully it will continue at that pace and if anything, just get even faster and better. Like a growing Kanye.

Until then... aka next week - Peace Out you Jive Turkeys.

A Panther Who is Good At Expressing Himself

I have one for the Tiger too, but it's drawn on paper, so I have to scan it when I get home to my scanner. Then I'll color it in the Lab tomorrow. Other than that, Tomorrow is a day for backgrounds, lighting sheets, doing more CG layouts (Explanation for that coming soon), and making a few important calls.

Also - I would like to meet with Tom Sito and fix some of my layouts for the exorcism action scenes.

You're TEARING me APART, Lisa!

This week makes me feel like:

This.

and

Like this.

But mostly.

Like this.

Well, the week began with a wondrous start. I recorded Mr. Rocky Collins and Mr. Wilder Shaw (Shan't link to them again. I've linked to them enough in past posts). The recording went swimmingly. I've got Wilder in two roles and it's impossible to tell - and on top of that, Rocky gave his own wild performance that I can't WAIT to animate to, because it's just so damn quirky.

"What?" You, the loyal and consistent reader of this blog says, "I thought you were handsome and ready to go in every way!"

And the answer is. I WAS. (Well, I'm still handsome). But, after all the recording I hurried up to my cubicle to begin work. And I did this. It took a few hours but I love it.

Ps. The sync is a lil' off, but that has since been fixed.

"Is it gone? For good?" Roughs from Ezra Edmond on Vimeo.

So. I love that. And I wanted to do more and more. BUT MY CINTIQ CABLE BROKE. UGH. AND IT HAS BEEN UDDER HELL TRYING TO GET A NEW "S-video to USB" or a "Mini din 8 to USB". Like. Bloody. Impossible.

SO. I ordered an S-Video cable off amazon and adapter. Should have arrived already, but Amazon lost it. So, they are sending it again. Hopefully it gets here. Then I ordered an 8 pin Din and USB adapter off some other site. But that still hasn't arrived. I went to 3 electronic stores, including FRYS (Which has never been helpful in my experience), and this is just plain frustrating now. I have more to rant about, but hopefully in the next 2 days I will have my Cintiq working again, and nothing to complain about - at least for a while.

So in the meantime, I've been working out shots, and editing all of my audio. That is going well. Just wish I could have been animating all this week instead of watching time drip through my hands like those artificial hands dripped through Edward Scissorhands blades.

I'll post the sound cut / with some animation n such for y'all soon.

I feel like I'm the little kid here and this counter is the thesis which I am attempting to work on. It is difficult to reach when these guys keep getting in my way.

Maquettes and Other Things That Amuse

Hey Everyone,

So this week I was focusing on building a maquette of the Panther head (See below) because he is a little bit of a pain-in-da-bum to draw. I'm actually quite happy how the maquette turned out. Except for the fact that he is slightly off model, and looks a lil like Joe Camel - he will be very helpful for me to reference. I hadn't built anything out of clay in a while, but now I'm almost tempted to do one of the Tiger too, just because he was so much fun to make.

Now on top of that. This week I retyped the script, because the copy I was working with got way too out of hand with improper formatting and well... all my storyboards in the margins.

I.e:

Now, while I will keep boarding on the printed one, the rewritten one will be much better for my own reference, as well as the references of the actor that I am recording on Saturday. Which is to break the news to y'all that Wilder Shaw (Who is also doing my score as of now), will be providing the voice of THE TIGER and THE OLD MAN. We will be recording on Saturday, and then you will be able to hear the lines applied to the new animatic that will be up and running properly soon (I apologize for not having one already).

Also, I've begun doing PRINCIPAL ANIMATION. Mainly rough key-frames. I think I'll go through the whole film in roughs and then tween it all, and then clean it all up/color - and as soon as the school gets the GenArts Sapphire plugins working for After Effects, I will be doing shading and all other sorts of lovely touches like that.

I'll post roughs eventually. As soon as I have a sequence roughed out and it's something worth all your time in watching.

As far as difficulties go, I am still trying to kick the MineCraft addiction, and other school work, as well as editing Single (My feature live-action film). Those things are just occupying my time - and all of them have business being there, that is except for the Minecraft chore. That game has got to go.

I also met with Tom Sito this week to touch up a part in my story that wasn't anywhere near as dramatic as it should be. Changes have been made.

So now. Finally. For your reading pleasure, I present the new and improved script for 'THE TIGER'.

Enjoy. (Download Link - Too much text to include in this post)

THE TIGER: SHOOTING SCRIPT

Now, Enjoy something completely different and still totally wonderful.

A TYPICAL Tuesday

Hello folks it is Tuesday.

Sorry this post is a little late. This week, I worked on Panther expressions which was neither easy nor hard, and then got pretty much distracted the rest of the weekend. A wasted weekend is a terrible thing to have.

I'm trying to work on some backgrounds or concept are right now - which should be up tonight. At least a color script and some concept at will be up soon.

Then I am working on final animation as well as boarding out unfinished scenes and working here n there on the animatic. You should be seeing some cool stuff on here in the next couple of hours - especially since the WACOM tablet is now calibrated to work on this computer I can get some stuff done, and give the cintiq a lil rest.

THE HARDEST THING NOW is not to get distracted. I downloaded this video game the other day. Minecraft And I haven't been able to stop playing. which is not good news. I MUST PUT THIS GAME DOWN MORE OFTEN SO THAT I CAN work. Otherwise - there will be big problems in the future of thesis production.

But this world is perfect. and in a perfect world, everything gets done perfectly - on time - and is met with thunderous applause and jobs handed out like candy corn after Halloween.

perfect world, right?

no?

Just ask Tom Jones.

Nah, I'll have some art for y'all to feed your eyes on later.

giggle.

MORE CHARACTERS (have been designed)....

Alright. Without further ado, here is the rest of the characters in the film! Like before these are the character's heads/faces with the exception of "The Beasts" (1&2), which are full body right here. The Nurse has just one expression 'cause she is literally there only for a shot (and an establishing one). As to "The Beasts", they all run in a pack and will be surrounded by dust and other particles (see previous post). They are also transparent, spectral like creatures, and the tail on the 4-legged one, as well as the 'hair'/ 'tail' on the bird, will be represented with green fire - not shoddy line work. the water around the sharks fin might also be done with particles. Whichever is easier when the time comes to it.

Enjoy.

Partial Particles!

Well, I got my Particle effects software up n running. Meaning I don't have to animate EVERY DARN cloud of dust in this film, which really is a miracle, as there is a lot.

Well. That's all for now.

No picz.

Sorry, sports.

An Update (of sorts)

I know I already updated once this week, but let me give a lil follow up to address the following questions. Ain't no rule about updating twice in a week.

1. What was the most difficult part of your production process this week? You cannot say “nothing”. If you feel it’s been an exceptionally easy week, dig deeper and think about one thing you could improve upon.

Most difficult part of my production process this week was working on the run cycle I did (see below) and coming up with more general 'look' development that will be posted soon. I am shifting the color pallet from brown and red/orange to Purple and Green - akin to "Friends on the Other Side" from The Princess and the Frog.

2. What was the most interesting, fun or successful part of your production process this week? Did you stumble upon a time saving technique? Did you finally master that walk cycle? Did you accomplish something you are especially pleased with?

I am rather proud of the run cycle I did this week (see below again), though I was given some good notes on how to improve it. And I am proud of my character redesigns that I've been working on. I also modeled the Car in Maya, and toon shaded it which looks pretty darn 'the part' as well. I'll post up some pic-a-tures soon.

Anyways... that is all. At ease readers.

The best part of waking up is Nick Frost in your cup! :D
